"News" (2012) is a durational performance by Rebecca Davis that yields a large-scale drawing. Performers wear shoes constructed from newspaper and walk continuously in a circle on a large sheet of white paper until the gallery closes. Over time, the newspaper’s black ink transfers a variegated circle onto the white paper, leaving a visual record of the performance.

This is a work performed by the public. Anyone who wishes to participate is welcome, and can perform for as long they wish.

Both physically and symbolically, the work constructs as it deconstructs. Walking destroys the newspaper shoes but creates the drawing. And as the ink darkens the paper, the headlines it formed fade in our collective memory.

Rebecca Davis’ work encompasses performance, installation and sculpture. She is a current Resident Artist at HERE Art Center, where she will premiere a new work in April 2015. Davis was a Re-performer in the Marina Abramovic retrospective The Artist is Present at the Museum of Modern Art in 2010. She has had the great pleasure of teaching with Ms. Abramovic in many contexts since then. Davis has choreographed three works for visual artists Allora & Calzadilla: Body in Flight (Delta) and Body in Flight (American) for the United States Pavilion in the 54th Venice Biennale, and Revolving Door for the 11 Rooms, 12 Rooms, and 14 Rooms Exhibitions.
