Week two of Terra Comunal - MAI begins today. Until May 10, SESC Pompeia in São Paulo will be hosting the worldwide launch of MAI with all of its components. The exhibition experience is enhanced by the venue’s lively atmosphere and SESC’s own calendar of concerts, scenic shows, sports, and community activities. Here's a short overview of the first week:
#1 Tuesday, March 10, 2015
Terra Comunal - MAI starts with long durational performances curated by MAI Presents. These include Body Crumbling by Paula Garcia, The Bond by Mauricio Ianês, The Garden by Rubiane Maia, and The Typewriter by Fernando Ribeiro. Grupo EmpreZa starts conceiving the first of six Serões Performáticos, part of their Vesuvius performance project. When the Serões are not happening, their makeshift residency at the “In Between” space serves as an open atelier for the public to visit.
The performance Fulfilling the Space by Marco Paulo Rolla is also exhibited at the “In Between” area. Additional performances will take place daily from April 7 - 12.
Ayrson Heráclito performs Transmutation of Meat at the central street of SESC Pompeia. This performance will be shown again on the last day of Terra Comunal - MAI, May 10.

Marina Abramovic's first of seven lectures on performance art is held, during which she presents examples by various artists of works using the human head as medium. The subsesquent lectures will be held on March 26, April 2, April 8, April 15, April 22 and April 30, at 8pm - BRT (7pm EST).

Maikon K starts performing DNA of DAN at the main “Living Area” of SESC Pompeia, between the space dedicated to Marina Abramovic's retrospective and the Abramovic Method territory. This performance is repeated the following two days as well.

In addition to the penultimate performance of Maikon K's DNA of DAN, university professors Lucio Agra and Naira Ciotti (both PUC-SP Arts Course faculty members) present a lecture on teaching performance, exploring the concept of “professor-performer.”
#5 Saturday, March 14, 2015
The first of Grupo EmpreZa's Serões Performáticos, part of a larger work titled Vesuvius, takes place at the “In Between” area. It consists of five short performances where blood is the main subject. This is also the last day to see Maikon K's DNA of DAN.
In addition to ongoing long durational works, this week will feature:
- Freeing the Voice re-performance, Saturday, March 21, 1pm - 9pm BRT (12pm - 8pm EST) at the “In Between” space: This is the first in a series of three works by Marina Abramovic re-performed by Andrea Boller. The other two pieces, Freeing the Memory and Freeing the Body, will take place respectively on April 4 and April 18.
- Lynsey Peisinger's untitled long durational performance, Sunday, March 22, 1pm to 7pm - BRT (12pm - 6pm EST) at the “In Between” space : Peisinger is a Paris-based choreographer and performer, working together with Marina Abramovic as a collaborator on the Abramovic Method and the MAI Prototype. Together with Paula Garcia and Marina Abramovic, she is also a curator of MAI Presents section of Terra Comunal featuring eight Brazilian performance artists.
